This week in social studies and advisory!

Hello there,
I hope you all enjoyed the lovely weather over the weekend!

For the FIRST TIME EVER my advisory is going to Nick's on Wednesday! Please remember to bring your permission slip in by Wednesday, and to bring $5 for pizza on Wednesday.

For social studies, we have homework on Monday night, and a quiz on Wednesday (so Tuesday night you have homework too--study for the quiz!) Please see the weekly syllabus for further details. You can find it by clicking HERE.

Remember, if you wish to do the CROP WALK on Sunday, May 1st, you need to get a permission slip signed and bring it with you to the walk. You can find permission slips on the bulletin board just outside the C wing.

Finally, permission slips for Key Lime Cove are due April 20th! You can find these next to Ms. Pavlis' room on the bulletin board.

Homework:

Pretend you are a teenager living in Boston at the time of the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party. First, decide if you are a Loyalist or a Patriot. Second, choose if you wish to write about the Boston Massacre OR the Boston Tea Party. Once you’ve decided, write a letter to a friend (at least 2 paragraphs) describing the event from your point of view. Talk about how you feel about the events taking place. Be sure to include 3-5 specific facts about the event in your letter.

Read “Life at the Time: A Spirit of Protest” very carefully (pp. 154-155). If you were a colonists at that time, which method of protest would you choose and why? Respond by writing at least 5-8 sentences.

Case Study: French Law concerning religious garb in public schools

Homework:

1. Label one spiral notebook with permanent marker: on the cover write your first and last name, and write social studies (if you prefer to use a 3-ring binder instead of a spiral notebook, you may. Just be sure that you have one binder that is just for social studies)

2. Label one 2-pocket folder with permanent marker: on the cover write your first and last name, and write “social studies”

3. Make sure you have a safe place for your history book at home! Be ready to tell me where you are going to be keeping it!

A little about me

I have been teaching for over 15 years. At first, I taught college students. For the past 5 years, I taught high school students in social studies and language arts. I have two kids, a 7th grader and a freshman in high school. I also have a dog named Scout! When I'm not at work or hanging out with my kids, I love love love to read, go running, and travel. Some of the best books I've read recently include The Hunger Games, Chasing Fire and the Harry Potter series. A few things I wish I could do more often include going to Cubs games and attending musicals such as Wicked and Billy Elliot!
