MAP Testing this week

This week we have MAP testing and curriculum night. It is going to be a busy, crazy week!
You will have 1st and 2nd period on Monday, but not 6th or 7th. On Tuesday, we'll start the day with 7th, then 6th, and you won't go to 1st or 2nd period class.

I know, it is confusing, right?

The good news about homework is that there isn't any tonight (Monday) or tomorrow (Tuesday) night! You will have homework on Wednesday, Thursday, and over the weekend.

We will be looking at some different depictions of the Boston Massacre and other events during this period in order to learn about visual analysis of primary historical documents.

Curriculum night is this Wednesday! Please have your parents come so I can meet them!

Choose a different act from last week, and choose one of the following:

Draw a cartoon protesting one of the three acts mentioned in this section—full page, in color

OR

Write a one paragraph protest speech against one of the three acts mentioned in this section (5-8 sentences long minimum)

In class: Visual analysis of primary text –Boston Massacre

Continue work on classroom timeline

Homework:

Pretend you are a teenager living in Boston at the time of the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party. First, decide if you are a Loyalist or a Patriot. Second, choose if you wish to write about the Boston Massacre OR the Boston Tea Party. Once you’ve decided, write a letter to a friend (at least 2 paragraphs) describing the event from your point of view. Talk about how you feel about the events taking place. Be sure to include 3-5 specific facts about the event in your letter.

Read “Life at the Time: A Spirit of Protest” very carefully (pp. 154-155). If you were a colonists at that time, which method of protest would you choose and why? Respond by writing at least 5-8 sentences.

Case Study: French Law concerning religious garb in public schools

Homework:

1. Label one spiral notebook with permanent marker: on the cover write your first and last name, and write social studies (if you prefer to use a 3-ring binder instead of a spiral notebook, you may. Just be sure that you have one binder that is just for social studies)

2. Label one 2-pocket folder with permanent marker: on the cover write your first and last name, and write “social studies”

3. Make sure you have a safe place for your history book at home! Be ready to tell me where you are going to be keeping it!

A little about me

I have been teaching for over 15 years. At first, I taught college students. For the past 5 years, I taught high school students in social studies and language arts. I have two kids, a 7th grader and a freshman in high school. I also have a dog named Scout! When I'm not at work or hanging out with my kids, I love love love to read, go running, and travel. Some of the best books I've read recently include The Hunger Games, Chasing Fire and the Harry Potter series. A few things I wish I could do more often include going to Cubs games and attending musicals such as Wicked and Billy Elliot!
